Being a leader among leaders is an important aspect of being a teacher. The following is a list of academic leadership roles I have held while working at Swan Valley Middle School.
District Technology Committee: 2014-2017
This group meets monthly with members from all buildings in the district, as well as the ISD, to work on your district technology vision. We work out technology problems and continue redefining our goals for the whole school technology transformation.
M-Step Committee: 2015
With the new state standardized tests requiring the use of computers, the format for testing all students in the required time needed to be evaluated and revised. As part of this group, I helped organize and determine the schedule we used for M-Step testing for the sixth, seventh, and eighth graders in our building.
District Assessment Committee: 2015-2017
As standardized tests change, our school needed to evaluate and update our District's assessment program. Through this committee I helped revise the middle school assessment and evaluation program
Technology Coach: 2014-2015
As one of our building technology coaches, I work with staff members to help transition our school 1:1 with iPads. I have helped students and staff with technology issues. I have also worked one on one with staff members to help them become more comfortable with technology resources.
SVMS Geek Squad Co-Chair: 2014
As co-chair I organized and ran team meetings. I also helped create an Acceptable Use Policy as well as created a device roll-out timeline for when we transitioned 1:1 with iPads.
SRI Coordinator: 2011-2015
The Student Responsibility Initiative was created to reward students who exemplify responsibility on a daily basis. A large part of the SRI program requires teachers to track when students are not being responsible. These records are kept on a Google Doc. At the end of each SRI period, the data has to be compiled to determine which students can attend the reward activity. I have helped coordinate this process over the last several years.
Science Curriculum: 2009-2017
During the 2009-2010 school year, the science staff updated the district science curriculum. I was the sole creator of the 8th grade Earth Science Curriculum. I spent time talking with 8th grade earth science teachers from other districts to get ideas about best practices and book options. I also attended several conferences hosted by SVSU about the changes in the science curriculum and resources that were available. I am part of the team currently working on revising our science curriculum to align with the Next Generation Science Standards as well as the new Michigan science standards.
Washington DC Chaperone / Saginaw DC: 2007-2017
Every spring, the 8th grade students have the opportunity to attend a five day trip to Washington, DC. I have helped chaperone this trip six times. Students who are unable to attend the trip have been offered a virtual experience of Washington, DC, which we call Saginaw DC. During years that I did not chaperone the trip, I helped coordinate activities for the students who stayed in Saginaw, including virtual field trips, creating 3-D models of Washington DC, and video conferences with various museum specialists from Washington, DC.
